A block party is a great way to celebrate the summer. And a summertime block party is the perfect chance to re-introduce yourself to the neighbors. As well as introduce yourself to some of the newer arrivals. A block party provides that opportunity to not only catch up but to help us to create those neighborly bonds too. Why not celebrate your neighborhood with this long established traditional summer soiree.
In my time I have helped organized a block party or two. But it has always been for someone else. I have lived in my area for well over ten years. But it took a recent fun filled block party for me to really get to know some of my neighbors.
Why don’t you Host a Block Party this Summer?
Here’s what happened at our recent block party. One neighbor is pregnant with her fifth child, one neighbor is in remission while another has just started chemotherapy. The kids enjoyed an awesome water fight, the adults got to know each other again and the food was out of this world. Did I mention the adult beverages and in the end friendships were reignited and future plans were made. The votes are in and we all agree, a fun time was had by all.
Why don’t you host a block party this summer? They are a fun and relaxed way to meet and connect with people while enjoying the beautiful weather. And while panning any kind of party can present challenges. A block party can be amazing without the threat of you being gobsmacked by a ton of work.
How to Plan a Most Excellent Block Party!
Remember throwing a block party never has to be tricky. With a little attention, forethought and help, you too can enjoy a fun block party.
Ask for Help and Create a Committee. One of the secrets to planning a successful block party is having lots of help. Doing it all on your own can be a hard task. So ask around the neighborhood and put a committee together. By getting others involved the party will be that much more successful. And assign duties based on people’s strong points.
Plan, Plan, Plan. Assign tasks. And as a group make the party decisions. Establish the timing and theme or no theme. Decide how to pay for the party, who will bring what and which businesses to contact for donations and sponsorship just to name a few. Doling out the party duties will help to make the planning party experience that much easier.
Invitations. Approximately four weeks prior create and deliver the party invites. Invitations should be basic and just in case include contact names and numbers. Outside of the “assigned” contributions be sure to inform guests what they are responsible to bring like chairs, beverages and a cooler.
Permits. Check with City Hall and find out which steps are required to take and which aren’t. Find out if and where a permit is needed and what procedures need to be followed. For some areas group get-togethers, noise laws, blocking off streets and placing barriers you may need a permit or permission from the city. And always, always obey the local laws.
Food Glorious Food. The best and most economical way to do food for a block party is potluck. As neighbors RSVP have a committee member assign a dish (or supplies). Ask someone to bring a yummy main, side, sweet, finger food as well as napkins, disposable plates and eating utensils. And remember to be accommodating if someone wants to contribute their specialty let them go for it.
Safety First. When it comes to a block party there is quite a bit that can go wrong. Safety always comes first. Whether they are participating or not share all the party elements and rules with the neighborhood. In order to protect everyone and I do mean everyone ensure a waiver is signed by each household. And ahead of time do your best to reduce any on site risks.
Activities, Games and Fun, oh my. The whole point of a block party is joy and amusement. We all want guests to enjoy and have fun. So be sure to plan out some entertaining games and activities that will appeal to both kids and adults. Stagger the games throughout the event. And have some super fun games ready just for the kids.
Groove to the Music. I’m all for playing tunes especially at a block party. Music is a wonderful addition and will definitely set the party tone for any event. The only trick is in finding the just right music that will please a wide range of guests. So create a playlist that will please everyone no matter their age.
It’s all about the Cleanup. Prior to the party it is the responsibility of the homeowner to ensure their area is presentable. Be sure to position way too many trash and recycling cans around the block party area. And once the party is over the cleanup crew goes into action. Cleaning up every single bit of litter left over.
