Pretty much every job requires some form of communication. And for some people the ability to communicate comes easier than it does for others. In the meetings and events industry, conference planners rely on communication as an important part of their job. After all, conference planners are very careful to ensure that the wishes of their clients are carried out at the supplier level.
Communication can also be very frustrating. How many times have you thought you understood what was expected, then went out and did the task only to find out, from your client, that it was not anywhere close to what they were expecting. Yet you went back through your notes and sure enough what you did is exactly what the client had asked for. But now all of a sudden the client has no recollection of that request whatsoever. This is usually when you either want to pull your hair out or run to the top of the highest mountain and scream at the top of your lungs. But professionalism gets the better of you, you bite your tongue (often right through) and carry-on.
The video below is provided for all you conference planners out there who could use a little bit of comic relief. Anyone familiar with the old BBC show Fawlty Towers knows that when something can go wrong it usually does when Basil Fawlty is involved with trying to correct the situation. In this short clip Basil is trying to resolve a few communication issues with a hotel guest.
So for any of you conference planners or meeting planners that have had some communication issues recently with clients you’re sure to get a chuckle. Even if you’re not a conference planner this video will put a smile on your face for sure. Save this video and when you’re having one of those days come back and look at it – if you don’t get a chuckle maybe it’s time for a long holiday.
