Many Americans are busy planning a party for Super Bowl Sunday. When you think of Super Bowl parties, most often food items like chicken wings and pizza go hand-in-hand. Super Bowl Sunday is the day that sees Americans consume a great deal of our favorite snack foods. In fact, speaking in consumption terms, Super Bowl Sunday is only outdone by Thanksgiving. That’s a lot of food. But after all it is a party and no matter which team you’re rooting for there’s one thing that’s certain, you’re probably going to leave your Super Bowl party feeling very full.
Planning a Party for Super Bowl Sunday-by the Numbers
The numbers are staggering. According to the Huffington Post we’re expected to eat a whole day’s worth of calories during the game. Here are a few of the items that you can expect to see at your Super Bowl party:
- potato chips (we should go through around 11,000,000 pounds)
- chicken wings (a mere 1.2 5 billion will be consumed)
- potato skins
- pizza slices
- beer (okay so it’s not food but what would be a Super Bowl party without beer)
Do you think you know how many calories you’re going to consume? Well, if you’re like me, I don’t even know what a portion size looks like anymore. And according to the Huffington Post article neither do most Americans. But it is a party and we don’t normally go to parties thinking about all the healthy foods we’re going to consume. But if you’re interested, and I’m warning you here, head on over to the Huffington Post article where they also have a quiz. See if you’re able to determine how many calories you can expect to consume. If you’re like me you’re going to be surprised by your outcome. There are only 10 questions and yes you are allowed to skip.
Over 1 billion chicken wings? That would amount to 4 wings for every American…including babies, prisoners, and all the people that just don’t like them. I think somebody added an extra zero or two.
It does sound impossible. But the National Chicken Council states that 1.25 Billion chicken wings were consumed on Super Bowl Sunday 2014.
