The Best Career Advice I’ve Ever Received

Good career advice may be the best secret to success. Who hasn’t received wise and timely advice on the path to a great career? Some of the more successful people hint that good career advice was one of the secrets to their success. And we’ve all been there. Someone takes the time to share their experience, insight or knowledge. The good, the bad and yes sometimes even the ugly. Most people I know have a similar story about someone taking the time to impart insightful wisdom and advice. And what a difference it made for them.

Good career advice helps inspire in those moments just when it’s needed. Now that doesn’t mean at times we’ll veer left when we should have veered right. We’ll still make mistakes but somehow the advice helps us to get through the trickier times.

You Never Know Where Good Career Advice Will Come From

If we’re fortunate enough the best advice we’ll receive comes before we even started along the way. I remember a college professor once told me “you can accomplish anything you set your sites on”. I was astonished in the best possible way. No one with the exception of my mom had ever said those words to me. And hearing them come from someone I respected made me think, maybe I can actually do this. And eventuality that lead me to pursue a career in event planning. Demonstrating that you never know where that flash of inspiration will come from.

Four Pieces of the Best Career Advice I Ever Received

Now it’s my turn. I was lucky enough to have a handful of friends and mentors to offer support and career advice. And these four pieces of advice with a bunch of others have helped me along the way.

“Success is in the Details.” As someone whose career path lead them to planning events. This piece of advice helped in a large way, even before I knew I needed it. Learning and understanding that every piece of the pie is important and merits attention. And every detail no matter how small does matter. Help me to become successful at one of the things I love the most, event planning.

“If You Listen, You Will Get It.” Many of those who made it to the top understand the value of listening. None of us know it all. So ask lots questions and truly listen to the answers. This piece of career advice has really helped to shape my career.

“Everything You Do is a Reflection of Who You Are.” That says it all. So stay organized, learn lots and manage your time effectively.

“Give Back.” I truly believe you get back what you put out. As the story goes, apparently I started helping others in kindergarten. So whether in my career or my personal life I always do my best to volunteer, help out or lend a hand whenever possible.
