So often I am asked by friends and family and once in a while even a client or two, what my top party planning tips are. Of course party planning tips can change on a dime, depending on the kind of party, who it’s for and what the theme is. But the tips that always seem to provide assistance and never really go out of fashion no matter what kind of celebration is being planned.
Party Planning Tip One – Pick a Theme
While enjoyable party planning for some can be a very stressful experience. And while deciding on a party theme can present its own set of challenges it can also help to make the planning that much easier. Choosing a theme will assist when it comes to invitations, colors, decorations, food and drink and the other required party bits and pieces. By keeping a party theme front and center, will not only help to influence decisions and choices but will help with not getting to gobsmacked with all the party possibilities. And by utilizing a theme, it will inspire and guide you through the steps of creating and deciding on party planning everything from A to Z. A party theme is also a really great way to get your party guests in that just right mood.
Party Planning Tip Two – Plan Ahead
One of the best pieces of party planning advice I have ever received was to start the planning process early and never ever procrastinate. In a perfect world, the majority of the preparation should be completed before even the first guest arrives, so start your planning early. Because while some of us do our best work at the very last minute, running around and pulling out our hair, when it comes to party planning I definitely would NOT recommend the last minute scenario. For me, it’s all about thinking things through, coming up with a plan, making decisions and then getting the work done in advance. In other words, follow the decided on theme, set up a party checklist timeline and then hit the ground running. By starting early, being flexible and allowing lots of time for great planning, in turn we give ourselves the space to decide, make all those important plans and shop.
Party Planning Tip Three – KISS (Keep it Simple Silly)
Throwing a party has absolutely nothing and I do mean nothing to do with perfection. And frankly, it took me a bit to catch on to that one. I was a bunch of “don’t touch that” or “move away from the dip” when it came to the time period before the start of a party. While it did take me a minute or two I did quickly learn perfection is not the name of the game when it comes to party planning. I promise not one single guest is going to remember what you did or served at your last celebration. So whether the theme calls for a casual, laid-back feel or a sophisticated, tasteful ambiance or somewhere else in between, keeping it simple (silly) is always the best policy. So instead of slaving away, follow your theme in a most simple and appealing way because it really is all about having a great time and doing things in a simplistic and enjoyable way.
