a close-up shot of food on a dinner plate with the words: a new business opportunity for wedding receptions in Oregon? overlaid. There’s a new trend popping up at wedding receptions in Oregon (and probably elsewhere where marijuana is legal). And a new business opportunity for wedding suppliers and planners. They’re called weed bars. At a recent wedding reception, the happy couple even hired a budtender (how’s that for entrepreneurship) for their weed bar to “assist” guests with their selection.

According to the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, it is legal to have marijuana on private property (the limit is 8 ounces) where no liquor license is involved. However for those enterprising caterers considering adding another revenue stream to their business, it’s not legal to serve alcohol (with a liquor license) and marijuana at the same event.

The “Happy” Couple Wanted to Start Their Marriage on a High Note

The couple in question, who were recently covered in a USA Today article, even hired a wedding planner to help with the arrangements.  But the planner did not handle any of the pot, or budtender, arrangements. The couple handled that aspect. But the planner did make sure that everyone was in a safe environment, which included transportation.

And what did the guests think of the weed bar? Well, if the response from an 81-year-old guest is any indication: people were skeptical at first but ended up loving it.

And even though the wedding reception caterer didn’t have anything to do with the weed bar, I bet they too were pleased as I’m sure they saw an increase in food consumption. Just a hunch.
