In this, Master The Event’s fist, podcast Randy Markus and Andrew Maxwell (of MasterTheEvent.com) talk about transportation issues and tips for the meeting and events industry.
To start off they relay a transportation horror story that they experienced with one of their groups. And it relates to booking the right transportation, which is not always the least expensive. The group in question were foreign travel writers. They were en route to Niagara Falls for an excursion when their coach broke down on the highway. The client, who was traveling with the group, called Andrew to relay the problem and requested action (like a new coach asap).
Sounds about normal, right? Wrong!
Well they both hopped in the car (with beer and refreshments in tow) and headed to the group. An alternate coach was booked. When they arrived to the side of the highway where the coach had broken down there was the driver, a larger individual, sitting on the side on the road in what appeared to be underwear smoking a cigarette. All while the guests were mulling around on the shoulder of the highway. The police arrived before a new coach did. Their message: get these people off the highway now! So the police called local taxis and as the taxis were arriving so was the new coach.
Timing huh?
In the end the client was happy (almost laughing, almost) the police were helpful with the wasted taxis and Randy and Andrew had a whole new set of standards moving forward. You’ll get a chuckle listening to these two tell how they learned a valuable lesson.
Randy then provides some tips to consider when booking transportation for a meeting or event, including:
- handling lost and found
- whether to book transportation as a two-way or straight charter
- airport transfer tips
- the benefit of always using airport meet and greet staff (worth their weight in gold)
- how to select a transportation company to fit your needs
Listen in as two event industry professionals share their experiences and provide valuable tips on event transportation.
