As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. I’m now beginning to think that also applies to facial expressions. I often refer to a meeting planner as someone who wears many hats. Now I realize that a meeting planner also wears many faces, whether he or she knows it or not. And just which type of face is showing depends on the stage of the meeting or event.
Facial expressions are important. We’ve all been in a position where we knew what the answer would be by looking at the person’s face. Well here’s a handy facial guide that will help you understand what your planner is trying to tell you. All tongue-in-cheek, of course.
A Meeting Planner’s Changing Face
The “Site Selection” Face
The “Negotiation” Face
The “Why Won’t This #$&*%@ Spreadsheet Work” Face
The “OMG We Are Over Budget” Face
The “For the Last Time the Bus Departs in 30 Min.” Face
The “What Do You Mean I’m in Phoenix, I Thought I Was in Chicago” Face
The “Event Is over I Want to Unwind” Face – a.k.a. The “Get out of My Way” Face
So the next time you see one of these facial expressions on your meeting or event planner you’ll know exactly what’s going on in his or her mind. Rather, you’d better know what’s going on in his or her mind. Hats off to the many hard-working planners out there. I think it’s time for the “get out of my way” face, don’t you?
