We’ve ushered in the New Year and typically a new year brings an onslaught of the latest and greatest event planning trends. And of course there are many, many variations on this topic. A recent “State of the Meeting Industry” survey of 383 meeting planners conducted by the US based organization Destination Hotels & Resorts mapped out the business of meetings and how they see the industry shaping up this year.
Some of the survey results related to budgets, meeting location and green meetings; and statistically things are definitely leaning towards a more positive year in our industry. Yippee! Here is a glimpse of just some of the numbers:
- 61% stated that budgets would remain the same; 20% anticipate an increase in their meeting budgets; 19% indicated that budgets would decrease
- 50% of meeting planners said the majority of their meetings will be in urban hotels; 25% said they will be planning their meetings at a resort
- 34% of the planners said that over 50% of their meetings would be national gatherings; 30% of the respondents said all their meetings would be local
- 45% of the planners said being green is somewhat important when choosing a venue, 18% said it was extremely important
Event Planning Trends – First Up Budgets, Budgets, Budgets
All signs seem to indicate that budgets will basically remain the static this year. One of the bigger struggles event and meeting industry professionals will encounter in 2013 is in the area of budgets. And while it has been reported meetings and events are on the upswing for 2013, this year will see the continuation of reducing budgets, cost cutting measures, increased event content, enhanced fees and yes accountability. But as it has been said the show or in this case the meeting must go on. And whether working a large or small meeting or event, successful planners will continually look for and implement creative and original ways to get the most from their event and meetings dollar.
Event Planning Trends – Next Up Location, Location, Location
When it comes to short listing and eventually booking a site for a meeting or event, the majority of planners say top of the list is location, location, location. Industry professionals know there are many reasons and elements that go into a successful meeting. And location is definitely a crucial one. With the business of airlines bring what it is, very unpredictable, an affordable and easy to get to locale can be key. A city must also have the right balance of; suitable meeting space and venues; an appropriately sized convention center; and hotels lots and lots of hotels. So trend wise, this year will bring a plethora of attention and bookings to those cities that can accommodate a meeting planner and their meeting criteria.
Event Planning Trends – Last But Not Certainly Not Least Green Meetings, Green Meetings, Green Meetings
An important and big event planning trend that began years ago and will continue in 2013 is Eco-Friendly Green Meetings. Meeting planners will continue to implement ways to cut back on excess, by utilizing tactics to do away with paper using online tools for printing, storing and sharing meeting info and executing invitations. As well, as sustaining the environment; by utilizing the three R’s reduce, recycle and reuse by recycling on-site whenever possible; reducing food waste and garbage and reusing where and when viable. No matter how you look at it this is a win-win situation.
As we welcome each New Year we welcome the opportunity to discover and follow new industry trends. Like with most things, some are more exciting than others but all are equally important. Year after year industry trends will continue to influence and effect the business of planning meetings. And planners will continue to implement trends into their meeting plans and blueprint.
