Selecting an event caterer to work with is one of the more crucial decisions an event planner has to make. When planning an event there are lots of important choices a planner comes face to face with. And when it comes to service and logistics it’s key to go with the supplier that will not only enhance your event but take it to the next level too. Food and beverage and the job of preparing and presenting it is a vital part of any event. Event planners will tell you that when working on food and beverage events you have to depend on and trust the knowledge, skill and know-how of the event caterer. Really there is way more to an exceptional caterer than just cooking food.

What does an Event Caterer Really Do?

Like so many industry careers event caterer sounds like one of the best occupations; filled with joy and excitement. And while the job does include those qualities. Really caterers are accountable for so much more than just fun and food. To be successful it requires a mishmash of abilities, cleverness and expertise. They are responsible for time management, budgeting, customer service, sales, marketing, vendor and staff management, accounting and yes food excellence, presentation and service.

Among other things, a qualified and professional caterer is there to help a client stay on budget, determine the right menu and quantities; and work with them to organize and provide the best food and beverage event. The right caterer can make a real difference. No matter the type of caterer needed, there are a great deal of elements that go into making that right decision. First and foremost ask questions and lots of them.

How long have you been in business?
Are you insured and licensed?
What’s the average price range?
What additional fees do you charge?
What kind of food do you offer?
Do you have a signature dish?
Are you able to accommodate dietary restrictions?
What is your tasting policy?
What other event services do you provide?
What do the service staff wear?
Can you provide references?
How far in advance do I have to book?
What do you do with the leftover food?

Finding the best caterer takes work but it’s essential to finding the right one. And like so many things, it’s worth the time and energy. A good caterer will go a long way to making things less stressful and more successful. So put in the time and do the groundwork and research and don’t hesitate in asking the questions that you need answers too.
