Last year WestJet released “Christmas Miracle’, where at two airports in Canada travelers were asked to share with Santa Claus what they were wishing for on Christmas. While the passengers were in flight, employees scurried around and you guessed it. When they landed they found all those Christmas gifts they told Santa they wanted waiting for them. A Christmas Miracle, if you will. Not only did the video get over 36 million views, we were all talking about it, making it a huge success. We’re happy to say WestJet repeated that miracle once again.
The Canadian airline re-created the video using a similar recipe but this time they shook things up a bit. And lucky for us just earlier this week, WestJet released its next surprise holiday video. And it’s hard to believe, but this year WestJet came up with a more uplifting, encouraging and moving snapshot of the “Christmas Miracle”. In a blog released with the 2014 video the airline wondered “What could we do to give back, and not just to give back, but to do so with purpose?” And as Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice-President, Sales Marketing and Guest Experience said “We decided to celebrate Christmas this year with a community that is near and dear to our hearts.”
With that in mind, in November the WestJet team set up shop in Nuevo Renacer, Dominican Republic. They put up Santa’s sleigh with a screen where Santa would materialize and asked “what do you want for Christmas?” And lots of folks answered. From a doll to a skateboard from a horse to a crib from a washing machine to a motorbike taxi engine, it seemed all the communities wants and needs were covered. And then it was time for the work. WestJet employees got shopping. They set out locally to purchase everything that was requested. The next day the entire community of 160 were extended an invite to an unexplained and secret party. Not one person had any idea what was about to occur.
WestJet employees materialized with bowed plastic bins in tow. And like a Christmas miracle in the bins were the doll, skateboard, washing machine and yes an engine. Every single wish was awarded, every last one yes including … the horse. And all the residents then enjoyed fireworks, a tree lighting and the next day a presentation of a new children’s playground right next to a school. And now all the kids have somewhere safe and close-by to play and it doesn’t cost them anything. Previously kids would arrive late for school but because of the playground they now arrive early. Allowing enough time for them to play before school starts. A total win-win situation.
Now is the Time for This Most Enjoyable Christmas Miracle Video
Since 2012 WestJet and their employees have been helping the community of Nuevo Renacer. Wanting to do something about the overall poverty and take things up a notch, WestJet partnered with the non-profit Live Different. And take it up a notch they did. In a press release, WestJet said “This was our chance to give the people of Nuevo Renacer an once-in-a-lifetime experience – a Canadian Christmas.” So wait no more, now is the time to enjoy WestJet’s “Spirit of Giving” video.
